Joseph and Christ

Listen to the sermon here

Luke 24:27 27: And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

As I wake this morning, I am filled with anticipation of where the story of God is leading us in the days to come. Seeing how faithfully God worked in Joseph’s life deepens my faith that God has great plans for Himself through our lives as well. I thought it important to begin last night with Hebrews 11:1-6 and finish with verse 22: By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

The point being: Joseph never wavered in his trust of God. Even in death he knew that a greater blessing was coming for the people he had delivered. He saw God’s bigger promise to the world and knew he was part of it and that God cannot fail. I will remind you again, God is getting glory through your life as well. Unfortunately, I did not have time to expound on how clearly Christ was presented in the life of Joseph. My first thoughts this morning were about the robe soaked in blood. It made me think of Christ crucified and descended to hell only to miraculously return three days later.

Of all the Old testament characters, Joseph was one of the most respected by the early and medieval church fathers as a type of Christ. While we do not have time in the weekend teachings to cover all that reminds us of Christ in Joseph, here is a partial list of types and shadows to help you meditate on Christ. If you would care to read a short article by H.A. Ironsides which expounds a bit on a few of these see here.

Also, check out this chart for an in depth look at the Joseph/Jesus parallels.
